How Long Do Puppy Fear Periods Last
Zoomies, also known as frenetic random activity periods, or frapping, are sudden bursts of wild, unbridled activity.
How long do puppy fear periods last. These fear periods are evolutionarily programmed and are protective for dogs in the wild. Puppies experience two fear periods during their development, and each fear period lasts for about 2 to 3 weeks, on average. Most puppies will go through a very trying stage when they turn about 5 months of age.
There are two major fear periods in a puppy’s socialization. Whilst the pup is going through human socialisation it also has an important fear/hazard avoidance period. This also coincides with a very critical socialization period.
This particular puppy fear stage is believed to be related to the surge in growth that occurs at this age which may cause some physical discomfort. A puppy at this age is just starting to spread its wings and is likely going to want to test you and their boundaries. So do not push them in at the deep end, or you’ll be paying for it the rest of the dog’s life.
If puppies have bad or scary experiences during this time, the impressions are likely to last a lifetime and resurface during maturity. There’s a lot to get used to and prepare for, but one thing that often gets overlooked is puppy fear periods. When your puppy challenges you and commands, you will find yourself needing to discipline your pup.
This starts at 5 weeks and peaks between 8 and 10.5 weeks. Sexual hormones surge now, too, which can cause mood changes and as a result, fearfulness. (if your puppy always found the world to be a scary place, he will most likely continue to be cautious or fearful as an adult, but he may be even more so in adolescence.)
This fear period tends to happen between twelve to fourteen months of age. To stick a puppy in a car or crate, for the first time, and take them totally away from their family on their first day away from the litter ever is a cruel practice. Puppies go through an important socialization period from approximately three weeks.
